Change is inevitable. Our society is composed by all kinds of people and some of them are unusual. A lot of people have different point of view on a subject or they aren’t similar physically or mentally. The other part, those who are like the majority, those who are ‘normal’, denies them or just doesn’t want to take the time to know them, because they are different. The sad reality of our society is that it doesn’t accept the change, because it’s scary, so the ones who are not like the rest are unfortunately rejected.
In the movie Phenomenon, John Travolta, the one who personifies George Malley, is the perfect example of the kind of person who scares a society. This is an excellent movie because it shows the reality this problem. The special effects with the powers of George are a good example of a change. The diction that uses Mr. Malley is another example of something that is unusual for his friends and this scared them. A lot of elements in the movie show the impact of a change on a society.
At the beginning of the story, he is like everyone else, a farmer who works in a garage and has plenty of friends. A day, he sees a flash of light in the sky and he becomes more intelligent. Then his capacity to learn grows a lot and he has supernatural powers. With is new capacities, he builds new technologies and show them to everyone. Also, with his powers, he wants to help people. Everything is fine for a while, but the people start to be more afraid of him and even his friends leave him alone. Everyone goes away from him, because he was different. He was just him, he was the same person with powers, but everyone was scared of his difference.
Also, change is inevitable, because our world is always evolving. When something changes, everyone is afraid, but with the time, it becomes normal. Why do we automatically judge someone at our first sight? I think that it’s not because someone is special that it is a freak and that we must be afraid. Our society is really good to judge too faster! We should take the time to know those people and don’t reject them.
In conclusion, a change is not necessary a synonym of scariness, but the society thinks like that. It’s the way people act since always and we can’t do anything. We have to live with it. The society is afraid of change, but if we try to make a difference, to fight this bad attitude, we can modify everything.
